Feline distemper, or feline panleukopenia, is caused by feline parvovirus. The virus is extremely resilient and can survive for months or even years, being immune to many household disinfectants.

The virus is spread by the body fluids of infected cats. These are often harbored in litter boxes, bedding, food dishes, and water bowls. A mother can that’s infected can also spread the feline parvovirus to her nursing kittens. Fleas can spread the virus, too.

Symptoms of feline distemper include depression, weight loss, lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite, weakness, and bloody diarrhea. An infected cat or kitten might also bite itself in the hindquarters.

This happens when a mosquito that’s infected with the worm larva bites a dog, transferring the larva to their new canine host. The heartworms grow and eventually find their way to the right ventricle of the heart, where they breed and multiply.

Obviously, the heart is greatly affected, but heartworms can also damage the liver and the lungs. Once the heartworm population reaches significant numbers, the heart will be unable to function properly, and the canine host will usually die of congestive heart failure.

Dog bloat is a serious and often life-threatening condition that is common in dogs. Any breed can be affected, but deep-chested breeds are especially at risk, including Great Danes, Doberman pinschers, Borzois, Irish wolfhounds, Irish setters, and Boxers.

The correct term for the condition is gastric dilatation-volvulus, or GDV. With GDV, excess gas builds up in the stomach, and the stomach often twists. With this gastric torsion, the gas has no way to escape, and the blood supply to the stomach is greatly diminished.

As the stomach cells atrophy, blood poisoning could follow. The organ might rupture, too. Deep veins are also compromised, affecting the liver, the spleen, and the heart. The cause of death with stomach bloat is often shock or cardiac arrest.

It’s been a while since I had an article about birds. So today I’d like to talk about Candidiasis in birds, symptoms and treatment of this yeast infection and problem for birds.

Candidiasis in birds is caused by a Candida yeast. The presence of the yeast is normal – it’s part of a healthy avian digestive tract. The problem occurs in birds that have a compromised digestive system, or in birds that have unusually large numbers of the yeast.

Cockatiels are especially susceptible to Candidiasis, but other species can also develop the condition. Young birds and birds that have been on long-term antibiotics are more likely to develop Candidiasis.
